Mounting Your TrailFX Liquid Transfer Tank

Mounting Your TrailFX Liquid Transfer Tank

Sara Ford |

TrailFX transfer tanks are built tough to make moving liquids easier and safer. We offer Steel tanks for diesel, hydraulic fluids, and other non-flammable liquids, and Aluminum tanks for diesel and non-potable water.

Important: These tanks are not designed for gasoline or other highly flammable liquids.

All tanks are designed for stability, durability, and long-term use — whether in a full-size truck bed, trailer, or crossover toolbox.

  • If transporting fuel or regulated liquids, check local, state, and federal rules.
  • Compliance is the responsibility of the installer/operator.

Why Mount Your Tank?

Proper mounting helps:

  • Keep the tank from moving while driving
  • Reduce vibration and wear
  • Protect your truck bed
  • Extend the life of your tank
  • Improve overall safety

If your tank is installed in a truck bed, trailer, or any vehicle that moves, it needs to be securely mounted.
An unsecured tank can move during braking, acceleration, or on rough roads, which can damage the tank, vehicle, or even cause injury.

Even if the tank isn’t being transported and is stationary, it should sit on a flat, stable surface and be tied down to prevent tipping.

Why Hardware Isn’t Included

Every truck and installation setup is different. Because of that, mounting hardware is sold separately so you can choose the right size and type for your specific vehicle or application.

Where to Find Mounting Hardware

  • Industrial fastener suppliers
  • Truck or auto parts stores
  • Farm and ranch supply stores
  • Online auto parts retailers

Tip: Choose rust-resistant, heavy-duty components rated for structural load.

Installation Tips

Mount through structural supports or crossmembers when possible. Bolting only through thin metal can fatigue over time.

  • Use at least four mounting points; bigger tanks may need more
  • Check hardware after first few trips and periodically after that
  • If you’re unsure about drilling or fastening, it’s worth having a professional handle it

Recommended Hardware

Bolts:

  • 3/8” minimum, 1/2” for larger tanks
  • Grade 5 or higher
  • Stainless is fine if it’s structural grade
    • 316 Stainless - for coastal, salty, or chemical-exposed environments to prevent long-term rust.
    • 304 Stainless - for standard, dry, or mildly corrosive environments.

Nuts:

  • Nylon lock nuts or standard nuts with thread locker

Washers & Reinforcement:

  • Large flat washers to distribute load
  • Backing plates under sheet metal strongly recommended
  • Rubber or neoprene pads to reduce vibration
